Selecting a Lighting Installer
Well, spring is upon us again, and many people are considering having landscape lighting in their gardens. If you have already had your landscaping done, then you may be able to get a head start on the season, and have lighting installed at the beginning of the season, so you can begin enjoying your new ‘outdoor extension’ as soon as it’s warm enough to sit outside in the evenings.
This is especially true, if you hire someone who specializes in landscape lighting installations, because they are not busy doing anything other than lighting.
If your landscaping is not quite where it will be later this season, you may want to consider having a lighting quotation at the same time as your landscape quotation, so that you can proceed with getting fully settled this year, or you can plan for phasing in lighting in the near future. Either way, it is imperative that the landscape crew know that you intend to have lighting so that they can save you money now by installing sleeving under hard surfaces, such as walkways and patios. This will enable wire to be run to the necessary places much more easily in the future. Be sure to know where these sleeves are, and at what depth they are buried!
In any case, you will need someone to install your lighting if you want excellent results. If you ask your landscaper about lighting, you may get the ‘Oh yeah, we can do that too’. Beware of that word ‘can’. Many people ‘can’ do lighting if you pay them to do so… the question is ‘should they’.

You want someone to DESIGN your lighting system, specific to your tastes and to the specifics of your home and property. You do NOT want someone to ‘throw in a few lights’ as many will tell you. You want someone to put thought into how YOU currently use your space, and how that may evolve once you can actually entertain, and relax at night in your new outdoor living room.
